Pakistan will forever remain the ICC Champions Trophy winner as no more edition of the event will take place. However, ICC replaced the tournament with World T20.
Pakistan won the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 by beating India in the final. Pakistan won that match with the huge margin of 180 runs. ICC Champions Trophy 2021 was scheduled in India and according to BCCI, the format switching will cost them $30 million losses.
ICC World T20 will be also held in Australia in 2020 and the decision will result in the back to back T20 world cups. After ICC World T20 2021, the tournament will be held after every 2 years.
Reasons for Change
ICC wants to promote cricket around the globe. The shorter format will help ICC to make cricket popular in different countries. In addition, ICC is also looking to take cricket in Olympics and T20 format would be the better option for that.
ICC is going to award T20 International status to all member countries. However, the total number of members is 104. All men’s cricket teams will get T20I status on January 1, 2019, while all women’s teams will get it on July 1, 2018.
