ISLAMABAD: Uzbek tennis team beat Pakistan 4 -1 in round two of Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group I held in Islamabad. Pakistan’s top ranked tennis start Aqeel Khan had won the match against Sanjar Fayziev 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Earlier, Aisam-ul-Haq had hurt his thumb in his singles match against Denis Istomin, forfeiting the match giving the match to Uzbekistan. Later Aqeel competed against Fayziev to level the tie 1-1. In the double, Aisam-ul-Haq and Aqeel Khan lost to Denis Istomin and Karimov 6-2, 6-4, letting Uzbekistan lead 2-1.
In his fourth rubber, Aqeel Khan played against Istomin, losing the match by 6-1, 6-3. The final match of the Davis Cup tie was played between Muzzamil Murtaza and Sultanov, Khumoyun, with Murtaza losing the match 6-3, 6-1. The matches were not for public view and invite only, so not a lot of crowd was there to cheer on the teams; however the Uzbek officials who were there celebrated the victory of their team.
