Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has denied making derogatory remarks about Babar Azam, emphasizing that his statement was misrepresented on social media. In an interview, Amir clarified his admiration for the talented captain and commended his exceptional performance across all formats.
Addressing the alleged comments, Mohammad Amir affirmed that he considers Babar Azam the best batter in Pakistan and has consistently praised his remarkable skills and technical prowess in numerous instances. The left-arm fast bowler acknowledged the difficulty of bowling against Azam in ODIs and Test matches due to his impeccable technique.
Amir emphasized that as a bowler, his primary objective is to take wickets, irrespective of the batsman’s stature in the team. Whether it’s the formidable captain or a tailender, Amir believes they are equally important to dismiss, especially in situations where the lower order is crucial to the outcome of the match.
During the eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League, Amir had previously mentioned that bowling to Babar or a tailender made no difference to him. He clarified that his intent was to highlight the need for consistent focus and determination as a bowler, regardless of the opponent’s batting position.
Regarding captaincy, Mohammad Amir expressed his support for Babar Azam to lead the Pakistani team in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. He firmly stated that there is no valid reason to change the captaincy and suggested that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) follow their decision in announcing the head coach by appointing Babar Azam as the captain.
Mohammad Amir’s clarification dismisses the misconceptions surrounding his alleged remarks about Babar Azam. He reaffirmed his admiration for Azam’s skills as the best batter in Pakistan and acknowledged the significance of tailenders in the game. Amir also voiced his support for Babar Azam’s captaincy, suggesting that the PCB should retain him as captain for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup.
