Ugly IPL 2023 fight: Kohli, Gambhir fined 100% match fees, Naveen-ul-Haq loses 50%

Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli made headlines for his heated exchange with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) player Naveen-ul-Haq and mentor Gautam Gambhir during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and LSG’s match, which ended in a thrilling low-scoring victory for RCB.

In the 17th over of the match, a heated argument ensued between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq, which captured on video. The video footage shows the former Indian captain getting visibly agitate over something that the Lucknow Super Giants batter said during the game.


Amidst the intense confrontation between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq, non-striking batter Amit Mishra and an umpire intervened, attempting to defuse the escalating emotions between the two players. Their efforts focused on calming the situation and restoring order on the field.

The conflict between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq didn’t seem to subside even after the initial altercation. The two players seen exchanging heated words once again during the post-game handshake between the teams. As the situation escalated, RCB player Glenn Maxwell intervened to defuse the tension and separate the players.


The tension between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq continued to simmer, even as Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants and a known rival of Kohli, involved in the altercation. Gambhir was first seen pulling LSG batter Kyle Mayers away from Kohli, and later he engaged in a heated argument with Kohli himself.

LSG mentor Gambhir notably celebrated aggressively after beating RCB at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. In Monday’s game, Kohli seemed to be more aggressive and responded to LSG’s celebrations after taking wickets.


In a separate video, the skipper of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) was urging Naveen-ul-Haq to possibly apologize to Virat Kohli. However, Naveen declined the request and proceeded onto the field.

The (BCCI) has penalized Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, and Naveen-ul-Haq for violating the IPL Code of Conduct.

Following their breach of the IPL Code of Conduct, Kohli and Gambhir fined 100% of their match fees. They committed a Level 2 offense, while Naveen-ul-Haq fined 50% of his match fees for a Level 1 offense. All three individuals accepted the sanctions after admitting to their respective offenses.
