Protect Yourself from SIM-Related Fraud: PTA Announces SIM Disowning Charge

In a recent development, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a “SIM Disowning Charge” applicable to Cellular Mobile Operators in Pakistan and AJK & GB. Effective from January 1, 2024, a charge of up to Rs. 200 will be imposed on SIMs with a retention period of less than six months.

To conveniently check the status of registered SIMs, consumers have two options. They can either visit https://cnic.sims.pk/ or send an SMS with their CNIC number (without dashes) to 668 (standard charges apply).

In an effort to streamline and secure the telecom landscape, all consumers are strongly advised to disown or return unnecessary SIMs by December 31, 2023, without incurring any charges. This proactive step not only helps consumers avoid the SIM disowning charge but also contributes to the responsible usage of SIM cards.

For cases where illegal SIMs have been issued without the knowledge or consent of the consumer, a one-time waiver against the SIM disowning charge will be granted.

This decision underscores PTA’s unwavering commitment to national safety and security, ensuring uninterrupted and high-quality services for all telecom consumers.
