PTA Announces Fines for Inactive SIM Cards from January 1, 2024

In a recent move to streamline and optimize mobile network resources, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced fines for users who keep their mobile SIM cards inactive for an extended period. Starting January 1, 2024, users who fail to use their SIM cards for six consecutive months will be subject to penalties.

The PTA emphasizes that this decision aims to address the issue of underutilized SIMs, as mobile operators in Pakistan provide SIM cards to the public for free. Often, users possess more SIMs than they actually need, contributing to a surplus of inactive connections.

According to the PTA’s notice, individuals who have not utilized their mobile SIMs for the specified period will face a fine of 200 rupees. This measure encourages users to reconsider the necessity of multiple SIMs and promotes responsible SIM card usage.

Gilgit-Baltistan Fine Charges

Mobile phone operators across Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan have been authorize to impose charges up to 200 rupees for the return of unused SIMs within the six-month timeframe. This move expected to encourage users to return unnecessary SIM cards and contribute to the efficient use of mobile network resources.

To facilitate the return process, the PTA advises all users to return any unnecessary SIM cards free of charge by December 31, 2023. Timely return of inactive SIMs will not only help users avoid fines but also play a crucial role in the responsible management of SIM cards.

Additionally, the PTA has assured users that in cases of illegal SIM issuance without proper user information or consent, a one-time free termination of the SIM will permitted.

To check the status of their registered SIMs, users can visit https://cnic.sims.pk/ and enter their CNIC number (without dashes). Alternatively, they can send an SMS to 668 with their CNIC number.

This initiative by the PTA aligns with the broader goal of promoting efficient use of mobile network resources and ensuring a streamlined and responsible approach to SIM card management.
