Karachi Weather Update: PMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain

PMD Predicts Rain, Thunderstorm in Karachi

Karachi, May 5, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Sunday issued a weather warning for Karachi for the next two days. The rain will bring relief from the heat, but Karachi’s weak infrastructure means it could also bring chaos. People hope the city will be prepared this time again for the disaster-free rainfall.

Dark Clouds Gather Over Karachi as Monsoon Looms Early

The PMD explained the weather system ahead to be a western disturbance that is moving into southern Pakistan. Meteorologists forecast moderate to heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms starting to hit in the night hours on Monday over the city. Some areas might receive up to 40mm of rainfall combined with strong winds.

“This system has the potential to bring heavy showers, especially on Tuesday,” warned Sardar Sarfaraz, Chief Meteorologist at PMD. “Low-lying areas may face waterlogging, so residents should stay alert.”

Breaking the Heatwave

Karachi has been baking under inclement weather, so to speak, with temperatures flirting around 40°C, and humidity has drenched the realm of any relief. Expected rains are actually a boon, to help cool down everything, the hot weather that frustrates the citizens.

“There have been sleepless nights due to the heat and load shedding,” shares Farhan Ahmed from Nazimabad, “And rain will be welcome, though I hope the streets don’t turn into rivers, unlike the last time.”

Power Woes Likely to Worsen

Karachi Electric (KE) warned that the wind and thunderstorm could damage the power lines, causing outages in several areas. “Our teams are on standby, but in such severe weather, interruptions are bound to happen,” a KE functionary resignedly declared.
