Renowned Pashto Poet and PTM Activist Gilaman Wazir Dies After Assassination Attempt

Gilaman Wazir, a well-known Pashto poet and prominent activist of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), passed away on Wednesday night in a hospital in Islamabad. This tragic event follows an assassination attempt on Sunday that left him seriously injured.

The attack on Wazir, a key member of PTM, has sparked widespread reactions within Pakistan and internationally. Manzoor Pashteen, the leader of PTM, confirmed Wazir’s death and expressed deep concern over the incident. Pashteen stated that if the Pakistani police fail to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, it would suggest possible government involvement in the attack. “It is very difficult for me to say that Gilaman Wazir is no longer among us,” Pashteen said.

Who Was Gilaman Wazir?

Born as Hazrat Naeem, Gilaman Wazir hailed from the Razmak area in North Waziristan. He was not only a close friend of Manzoor Pashteen but also a central council member of PTM and a revered poet in the Pashto language. His revolutionary poems often called for Pashtun unity and narrated the struggles and conflicts faced by the Pashtun community.

A Vocal Critic and Advocate

Wazir was known for his outspoken criticism of the Pakistani government. He frequently appeared in public donning clothes decorated with the three-colored Afghan flag, symbolizing his dedication to Pashtun rights. His patriotic poems and activism made him especially popular among the youth.

Reports indicate that Wazir had previously been detained by the Pakistani army for eight months, during which he endured torture. Despite these challenges, he remained a steadfast advocate for his cause.

The Final Journey

Wazir’s body has been transported from Islamabad to North Waziristan, where he will be laid to rest in his hometown. A procession accompanied the body, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he garnered among his followers.

Wazir is survived by his five children—three daughters and two sons—from his two marriages. His passing marks a significant loss for the Pashtun community and the PTM, leaving a void in the ongoing struggle for Pashtun rights and unity.

Reactions and Calls for Justice

The assassination attempt on Wazir has intensified calls for justice and accountability. PTM leader Manzoor Pashteen’s strong statements underscore the gravity of the situation. The incident has highlighted the dangers faced by activists and the critical need for protection and justice for those who champion the rights of marginalized communities.

As the Pashtun community mourns the loss of a beloved poet and activist, the call for justice for Gilaman Wazir resounds louder than ever. His legacy of resilience and advocacy will continue to inspire many in the fight for rights and equality.
