TV Anchor Ayesha Jehanzeb Allegedly Assaulted by Husband: Punjab CM Demands Justice and Protection

In a deeply troubling incident of domestic violence, private TV anchor Ayesha Jehanzeb has reportedly assaulted by her husband, Haris Ali. This incident has left Ayesha severely bruised and shaken. According to Geo News, the altercation began as a domestic dispute but escalated into a horrifying physical assault.

Ayesha underwent a medical examination and subsequently filed a case against her husband under charges of attempted murder. The police have confirmed that Haris Ali has arrested and is currently under investigation.

Domestic violence remains a pervasive issue globally, and Pakistan is no exception. Often, women hurt by their family members, leading to lifelong trauma. This latest incident has drawn swift action from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who has ordered the police to take decisive action against the accused.

Chief Minister Nawaz has also demanded a detailed report from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and has directed that Ayesha receive the best possible medical care and security. “Women are my red line; violence against domestic or working women will not be tolerated,” she stated emphatically.

Haris Ali presented in court, where a judicial magistrate approved a two-day physical remand. Ayesha lodged the case at the Sarwar Road police station, detailing in the first information report (FIR) the assault and injuries inflicted by her husband.

Violence Against Women in Pakistan

The unfortunate reality is that around 27% of women in Pakistan face violence at some point in their lives. Despite these alarming statistics, only about half of the women feel safe in their communities, according to a report by the Asia and the Pacific Policy Society.

Legal Framework and Implementation

The Sindh High Court has recently pointed out the lack of effective implementation of the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2013. The court has directed the government to ensure the Act’s enforcement and initiate a campaign to raise awareness about its objectives.

The assault on Ayesha Jehanzeb underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Pakistan. The swift response from the Punjab Chief Minister and the legal actions taken highlight the seriousness of the issue. However, there is a pressing need for continuous efforts to protect women and ensure justice is served.
