A tragic incident occurred at RG Kar Medical College in India involving a 31-year-old female trainee doctor named Momita. After finishing a 36-hour shift, she was forced to rest in a seminar hall due to the lack of a women’s common room. The next day, her parents couldn’t reach her. When they visited the hospital, they were initially denied access, which led to a commotion involving patients and their families. After searching the premises, Momita’s father discovered her lifeless body near the stairs in the seminar hall. She was found semi-naked with visible injuries.
Indian media reports revealed that after her death, the police initially pressured Momita’s father to file only a murder complaint. However, as the case gained attention on social media, public support grew, and her father decided not to stay silent. He insisted on adding rape charges to the case. A police officer mentioned that evidence suggested Momita was murdered and then raped. However, the post-mortem report revealed that she was raped while asleep and then brutally killed between 3 AM and 6 AM.
In connection with the crime, the police arrested a hospital volunteer, but the post-mortem findings suggest that more than one person was involved in the gang rape. Despite the arrest, protests continue across India, with the public demanding the strict enforcement of the death penalty for rapists.
