Khaleda Zia Passed Away in Dhaka at 80
Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia passed away early morning in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party confirmed her death at 6 a.m. local time. She had been ill for a long period and faced several health issues.
Hospital sources said her condition worsened late Monday night. Doctors placed her on life support. Her age and failing health limited treatment options.
Khaleda Zia’s Political Journey
Khaleda Zia made history in 1991. She became Bangladesh’s first female prime minister. She returned to office in 2001 after winning national elections. In October 2006, she stepped down ahead of polls.
Her career stayed in the public eye. Courts sentenced her to five years in prison in 2018 in corruption cases. She remained a central figure in Bangladeshi politics for decades.
Khaleda Zia was married to former President Ziaur Rahman. Her rivalry with Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina shaped Bangladesh’s politics for years. Last year, Sheikh Hasina left office, closing another chapter in that long contest.
Her son, Tarique Rahman, returned to Bangladesh a few days ago after 17 years in exile. His return came just before Khaleda Zia passed away.
Pakistan’s Condolence Message

He offered prayers for her family and the Bangladeshi people. He also prayed for her peace and mercy.
