As economic pressures and demonstrations by citizens continue to affect the country, the government of Iran has declared a financial support scheme, which will see the majority of its citizens receive tomans one million per month within four months. This is approximately the same amount as approximately seven dollars in the current exchange rates.
The Iranian officials claim that the initiative will assist in safeguarding the purchasing power of households, preventing the effects of inflation, and enhancing the availability of basic commodities. The support will not involve direct cash withdrawals but in the form of credits that can be utilized to buy the selected basic items.
The program will cover approximately 80 million people throughout the country according to authorities, which is why it is regarded as one of the most extensive social support programs that have been implemented in recent years. The announcement follows a series of protests that are being reported in various provinces, with a major cause being the increasing cost of living, the depreciation of currency, and falling real incomes.
Formal statistics suggest that the inflation rate was over 40 percent in December, further straining households already burdened in food, fuel and housing costs. The purchasing power has also been diminished as the Iranian rial has weakened considerably in the recent months.
According to economic analysts, short-term support measures can offer short-term relief, but long-term improvements are probably to be realized only through broader economic reforms, currency stabilization, and long-term inflation control. The government is yet to explain how the program will be continued after the first four months.
