On June 15, 2025, Israel launched an airstrike on a secret underground facility in Tehran during a high-level meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, where Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was present. The Israeli strike, as reported by Iran’s Fars News Agency, targeted all six entry and exit points of the site, disrupting power and ventilation systems. The president sustained minor leg injuries while escaping through an emergency shaft.
This is the result of speculation that appeared in the 12-day battle between Israel and Iran, starting on June 13. Earlier, videos posted on social media showed multiple explosions in northwest Tehran but the target seemed unclear. A July 7 interview augmented the news when Pezeshkian publicly charged Israel with trying to kill him.
According to Iranian sources, the targeted meeting involved key decision-makers. Israel has not issued an official comment on the claim, although Defense Minister Israel Katz denied any goal of regime change. Reports also suggest Ayatollah Khamenei was an intended target but was moved to a secure location during the initial wave of attacks.
The wider war involved Israeli air raids on Iranian nuclear and military installations which led to the death of more than 1,060 citizens. Iran countered with use of drones and missiles killing 29 people in Israel. On June 22, U.S. troops, acting on orders of President Donald Trump, carried out in-synch attacks against Iran nuclear facilities.
The fact that the Israeli attack on the Iranian president incident confirmed, presents another twist to the tense situation. Tensions are high despite a ceasefire that was negotiated on June 23. Iran is exploring plausible intelligence breaches in connection with the accuracy of the attack. The incident still lingers in discussions all over the area because nuclear negotiations are turning out to be unpredictable.
