Sydney: A man, who prevented an armed assailant in a deadly shooting at Bondi Beach, has been broadly lauded both as a hero and his acts as a sign of national togetherness by the prime minister of Australia.
The event took place on Sunday when a Jewish Hanukkah party was held at Bondi Beach, and two men fired at the participants. At least 15 were killed and over 42 injured in what the authorities have termed as anti-Semitic terrorist attack.
In the melee, one man, later recognized as 43-year old fruit shop owner Ahmed al-Ahmed, was caught on camera performing a tackle on one of the assailants and disarming him. In video footage, al-Ahmed can be seen seizing the gunman in the back, swinging him and snapping the weapon off his grip. He then raised the gun at the attacker, falling on the floor, and then rose and ran away.
The suspects are a 50-year-old man and a 24-year-old son of the man, detected by the New South Wales Police. Father was killed by the policeman in the process of the attack, and the investigation of the case continues.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese complimented the courage of al-Ahmed, indicating that his deeds were the best of Australian values. Albanese said that Ahmed al-Ahmed, at great cost to himself, removed the gun out of the hands of that perpetrator and sustained a severe injury as a consequence thereof. He is still in the hospital today, having operations.
