New York: United Nations is divided over Syria conflict as Russia vetoed the United States resolution at National Security Council. However, the US resolution suggested the investigation of chemical weapons attack in Syria. An alleged dangerous gas attack was reported in rebel-held Douma.
It is the 12th occasion when Russia used its veto power to prevent any action against Syrian ally. The US President, Donald Trump, also warned that the United States will not tolerate the use of chemical weapons on innocent citizens. According to Syrian news sources, at least 40 people were killed in the deadly gas attack.
The United States and Russia are Bashing on Each Other
The rivalry between the United States and the Russian Federation is not new. Both these countries have been confronting each other for several decades. Vassily Nebenzia, the Russian Ambassador, accused the US of planting the resolution as a justification for action against Syria. He said that we used our veto power to promote peace and security in Syria. It will ensure the protection of international rule of law in the region. Vassily further added that we do not want to drag Security Council into any adventure.
In response, the US ambassador, Nikki Haley, said that Russia has severely damaged the credibility of the United Nations Council. He further added that whenever we propose a meaningful solution of the Syria conflict, Russia vetoes it.
