‘Stronger Protection’ If Pfizer/AstraZeneca Shots Mixed With Moderna: British study

A better immune response has been found in people who first received a dose of AstraZeneca or Pfizer shots followed by Moderna a few weeks later, confirmed results of a British study into mixing different coronavirus vaccines.

“We found a really good immune response across the board…, in fact, higher than the threshold set by Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine two doses,” Matthew Snape, the Oxford professor behind the trial, told a foreign media outlet.

It is pertinent to mention that these findings will offer help to poor and middle income countries. These countries might need to mix different brands of vaccines if they run short of supplies of a single brand’s vaccine.

“I think the data from this study will be especially interesting and valuable to low- and middle-income countries where they’re still rolling out the first two doses of vaccines,” Snape added. “We’re showing you don’t have to stick rigidly to receiving the same vaccine for a second dose…and that if the programme will be delivered more quickly by using multiple vaccines, then it is okay to do so.”

Oxford University researchers said higher anti-bodies are produced as a response when a person gets a Moderna jab after an AstraZeneca dose.

1,070 volunteers took part in the major British study that also concluded that one Moderna shot after one Pfizer shot was better than two Pfizer shots itself.

On the other hand, a Pfizer shot followed by Novavax produced higher antibodies than the two-dose AstraZeneca vaccine.
