The stampede at New Delhi Railway Station happened around 8:00 PM, as thousands of passengers rushed to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh festival. The overcrowding on platforms 14 and 15 intensified due to last-minute train announcements, which created confusion and panic.
Eyewitnesses reported that as people hurried to change platforms, some passengers slipped on the footbridge, leading to a pile-up. The sudden chaos caused many individuals to be crushed under pressure, resulting in the tragic loss of lives.
Authorities’ Response to the New Delhi Railway Station Stampede
Following the New Delhi Railway Station stampede, authorities took immediate action to control the situation. Additional personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) were deployed to manage the crowd surge and prevent further incidents.
To accommodate stranded passengers, the government arranged four special trains to ease congestion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences, saying he was “distressed by the stampede”. Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered a high-level investigation to determine the cause of the deadly stampede.
In addition, the Railway Ministry announced financial compensation for the victims:
- ₹10 lakh for families of the deceased
- ₹2.5 lakh for those seriously injured
- ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries
