Nepal is set to appoint former chief justice Sushila Karki as the new Nepal Prime Minister, following the resignation of K.P. Sharma Oli after a week of anti-graft protests that turned violent.
According to Reuters, President Ramchandra Paudel and army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel have consulted constitutional experts and are moving toward appointing Karki as interim leader. The decision comes after violent protests left 34 people dead and more than 1,300 injured this week.
As meeting at the president’s residence expected to formalize Karki’s appointment. Protesters, largely from Generation Z, have been demanding her leadership, and negotiations suggest their demand is being accepted.
K.P. Sharma Oli resigned earlier this week after clashes between protesters and police escalated across Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal. The unrest was triggered by a social media ban, which was later withdrawn. Shops and traffic have started reopening in Kathmandu, but some roads remain blocked and soldiers are still patrolling the streets.
Being a country between India and China, Nepal has experienced recurrent periods of political instability since it dismantled its monarchy in 2008. Nepal has millions of Nepalis working overseas and remitting money back home which keeps the economy afloat. The election of Sushila Karki as the Prime Minister 2025 of Nepal may be a transitional step towards a stable situation in the country as it tries to manage both governance and economic issues.
The president’s office and the Nepal army have not yet issued formal confirmation, but multiple sources suggest that Sushila Karki will be officially declared as the next Nepal Prime Minister today.
