The Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 241 people, went down due to a suspected mechanical failure in the aircraft’s wings, aviation authorities confirmed. One passenger survived.
The plane took off from Ahmedabad Airport at 1:38 PM, heading for London. Just 30 seconds after takeoff, the pilot issued a mayday call. The aircraft lost communication with air traffic control at an altitude of 625 feet and crashed into a medical college hostel, killing five students.
According to initial investigation reports, experts believe a fault in the aircraft’s wings may have caused immediate instability, leading to the crash. One black box has been recovered. Search for the second is still underway.
Among the deceased were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also on board.
The crash raises major concerns about aircraft safety and engineering checks in the Indian aviation sector. The exact cause will be confirmed once the black box data is fully analyzed.
