World Environment Day 2023: Taking Action Against Plastic Pollution

World Environment Day is observed on Monday, focusing on the grave impacts of plastic pollution on nature and human health. This year’s theme, “#BeatPlasticPollution,” highlights the need for solutions.

Over 430 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally each year, with half designed for single-use purposes. To raise awareness about plastic pollution, various stakeholders, including the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency, NGOs, and civil society, are organizing awareness events.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasizes Pakistan’s commitment to combat plastic pollution. The government is actively working on the Plastics Prohibition Regulation 2023 for the Islamabad Capital Territory, aiming to phase out single-use plastics. Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Prime Minister House and federal ministries to stop using single-use plastics.

Minister for Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman, highlights the severe consequences of plastic pollution. Pakistan is dedicated to reducing plastic waste through the 7R’s Action Agenda, which includes reducing consumption, promoting recycling, and encouraging responsible practices.

Through these efforts, Pakistan aims to address plastic pollution and create a greener future.
