Dubai Students Develop Solar-Powered Driverless Car

In a remarkable display of innovation and technical expertise, 22 senior students from the Canadian University in Dubai have collaborated on a groundbreaking project to develop a solar-powered driverless car. This eco-friendly vehicle, solely fueled by the sun’s energy, was specifically designed for transportation between the university’s two campus buildings located in the bustling City Walk area.

Under the guidance of professors and working in teams, the undergraduate engineers from the school of engineering, applied science, and technology focused on various aspects of the car’s development. These included the navigation system, power capacity, bodywork, and chassis, culminating in a fully functional proof of concept design.

Feras Usmani, an exceptional electrical engineering and mechatronics student, shared his insight into the project’s challenges, particularly the integration of various systems into a cohesive unit. Thanks to effective teamwork and strong engineering skills, the car’s development was a resounding success.

One group took charge of the central processing design, skillfully managing the car’s controls and processing inputs from advanced camera and light detection and ranging (Lidar) system sensors, which serve as the car’s core intelligence. Meanwhile, another team was responsible for the innovative power supply system. They ingeniously utilized a photovoltaic panel on the car’s roof to charge the traction battery and provide a steady 60-volt power supply to the electronic devices.

This exceptional project not only showcased the students’ theoretical knowledge but also honed their interpersonal skills and technical expertise. Dr. Salih Rashid Majeed, an esteemed assistant professor in CUD’s school of engineering, applied science, and technology, emphasized the real-world application of theoretical knowledge and the vital role of teamwork in engineering.

Dubai has long been at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology, and this latest project further solidifies the UAE’s position as a pioneer in this field. Self-driving cars hold the potential to revolutionize road safety, optimize traffic efficiency, and substantially reduce carbon emissions. By harnessing its abundant natural resources and supporting innovative initiatives like the solar-powered driverless car, Dubai is actively spearheading the transition to autonomous transport.
