Pakistan shipped 81 tons of donkey meat, bones and skins to China through Gwadar on October 5, 2026, according to Gwadar Pro. Chinese company Hangeng sent three shipments, each with a net weight of 27 tons, from Gwadar’s North Free Zone.
Frozen Meat Leaves by Sea
Hangeng met the required export standards, completed customs clearance and followed the prescribed export procedures. A company official said the donkey meat travelled frozen by sea. The total of 81 tons includes meat, bones and skins.
The facility prohibits local sales of by-products. Export rules allow products to leave Gwadar Free Zone only by air or sea.
A $50 Million Plant Serves China
Construction of Hangeng’s slaughterhouse finished in 2025 at a reported cost of $50 million. Gwadar Pro describes the facility as Pakistan’s first modern donkey slaughterhouse under Chinese leadership.
Chinese producers use donkey skins to make ejiao, a gelatin product for traditional Chinese medicine. China also has a market for donkey meat.
China’s customs authority granted Hangeng a licence to export donkey meat on January 21, 2026, following an online inspection.
In July 2026, Hangeng exported donkey meat and skins worth $195,425 in two shipments. Gwadar Pro did not give a sale value for the October shipments.
Pakistan’s Donkey Population Reaches 6.2 Million
Pakistan’s Economic Survey 2025-26 estimates the country’s donkey population at 6.2 million, up from 6 million in 2024-25. Gwadar Pro places Pakistan third worldwide for donkey numbers.
