In an unexpected turn of events, a Karachi branch of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) discovered misprinted Rs1000 notes in their daily cash inflow. The notes, issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), were printed on one side only, leaving the other side blank.
The bank manager, in a video, revealed the peculiar nature of these notes. “We found bundles of Rs1000 notes printed only on one side in this morning’s cash delivery,” he stated. The discovery was made when a customer returned a misprinted note, leading to a thorough check of the newly arrived bundles.
The central bank has been alerted about the situation and the issue has been forwarded to the relevant department for further investigation.
This incident follows a concern raised by the Senate Standing Committee on Finance last December regarding the circulation of counterfeit Rs5000 notes. The committee’s chairman, Senator Salim Mandviwala, highlighted the severity of the issue by presenting a bundle of these fake notes during a meeting. He pointed out that even parliamentarians were not spared from this fraud.
The committee urged the central bank to take immediate and firm action to curb the circulation of counterfeit notes. Mandviwalla suggested that these fake notes might be entering the market through banks.
The SBP’s Deputy Governor, Dr Inayat Hussain, admitted that there is currently no system in place to prevent the production of counterfeit currency within the country.
