NYC Bans Generative AI in Schools Through Grade 8

New York City has announced a one-year ban on student-facing artificial intelligence tools in public elementary and middle schools, setting a major example for educational districts across the United States.

New York City has implemented a one-year moratorium on generative artificial intelligence tools for students from early childhood programs through the eighth grade. Affecting roughly 600,000 public school students, the policy suspends the use of about 40 educational software tools and completely bans companion chatbots across all grade levels.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized that children require human connection, peer collaboration, and independent problem-solving skills rather than relying on algorithms

While students face strict limits teachers remain permitted to use artificial intelligence for lesson planning and operational tasks.

High School Students and Screen Time Limits

While younger students face a total pause, high school students will take mandatory AI literacy classes twice a year and participate in supervised pilot programs using carefully vetted platforms

Additionally, the city has introduced recommended screen-time limits, capping daily use at 30 minutes for grades 3 through 5 and 45 minutes for grades 6 through 8.

Education experts note that because New York operates the largest public school system in the country, this decisive shift away from unvetted classroom technology could influence policy decisions nationwide.
