Sindh High Court: No More Fees for Matric & Inter Students!

In a significant development, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued a directive preventing educational boards in the province from imposing examination and certificate fees on matriculation and intermediate students, providing a substantial relief to the student community.

The SHC Sukkur bench, headed by Justice Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Arbab Ali, dismissed the review plea filed by the educational boards, upholding their initial decision to restrict the collection of fees. The legal representative for the educational boards had sought a review of the order, but the court maintained its stance on exempting students from these fees.

The court’s decision aligns with the Sindh government’s commitment to providing free education up to the intermediate level across the province since 2017. Notably, the educational boards receive funds from the provincial government to cover examination expenses and certificate issuance for students.

Assuring the court, the Assistant Advocate General affirmed that the provincial government would promptly release the necessary funds to the educational boards, ensuring the smooth conduct of examinations.

Amidst this development, intermediate students in Karachi are expressing their concerns over what they perceive as ‘unfair marking.’ In response to their grievances, numerous students, dissatisfied with their results, are submitting scrutiny forms in large numbers at the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK).

Adding to the complexity of the situation, parents are voicing their frustration with the examination outcomes, emphasizing the financial burden placed on them. “The BIEK is charging Rs 400 for scrutiny of each subject,” lamented concerned parents.

In a proactive move, the education department has established a committee to investigate the issue, signaling a commitment to address the concerns raised by students and parents alike. The submission of scrutiny forms will be accepted until February 12, allowing for a thorough examination of the alleged discrepancies in the examination process.

This decision by the Sindh High Court not only brings relief to students by waiving examination and certificate fees but also highlights the need for a fair and transparent evaluation process, urging educational institutions to address the grievances raised by the student community.
