Priyanka Chopra praises Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, who will direct the next Star Wars movie. Chopra, an international celebrity, commends the renowned filmmaker for her new project.
The star of Citadel, Priyanka Chopra, took to her Instagram Story to congratulate Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, an Oscar-winning filmmaker, for being the first woman of color and South Asian to direct a Star Wars movie. Chopra expressed her excitement and support for Chinoy’s historic achievement.
While some people praised Chopra for her kind words towards her friend, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, a few Pakistani celebrities, including Adnan Siddiqui and Goher Mumtaz, expressed their disapproval of Chopra. They criticized her for referring to Chinoy as “South Asian” instead of identifying her as Pakistani.
Adnan Siddiqui took to Twitter to express his disagreement with Priyanka Chopra’s comment. He started his tweet by saying, “With due respect, Priyanka Chopra, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a Pakistani first, just to brush up on your knowledge.”
Siddiqui then compared Chopra’s behavior to how she always identifies as an Indian and not as a South Asian. He criticized her for only claiming her South Asian identity when it is convenient for her.
Goher Mumtaz, a Pakistani musician, also shared his criticism of Priyanka Chopra’s comment. He urged Chopra to be more politically correct and mention Chinoy’s nationality, saying, “It’s a great achievement, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, but it would be wonderful if you [Priyanka Chopra] could write Pakistani director.” Mumtaz then suggested that Indians would not mind if Chopra were to use the correct terminology.
The upcoming Star Wars film, to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, is generating a lot of excitement as it is being touted as the first major release for Lucasfilm since 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Sources reveal that the project is currently in the scripting stage, and fans are eagerly awaiting more news and updates about the highly anticipated film.
