Breaking Bad Actor RJ Mitte Dies at 34 in Texas

RJ Mitte, who played Walter White Jr. in the hit television drama Breaking Bad, has died at 34. Police are investigating his death, and officials have not yet determined the cause or manner.

American actor RJ Mitte died in Brownsville, Texas, on October 12, according to his representatives and local police. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa said he was pronounced dead that day and that a post-mortem examination was planned. Police said the investigation remained ongoing. No foul play was suspected, according to initial reports.

Mitte’s representative, Sean Reilly, said the actor drew on his own experience with cerebral palsy to portray Walter White Jr., the son of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, in Breaking Bad. The series aired on AMC for five seasons from 2008 to 2013.

RJ Mitte’s Role in Breaking Bad

Mitte was born Roy Frank Mitte III on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. He moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and began pursuing acting, initially taking smaller roles, including an appearance on Hannah Montana.

He was cast as Walter White Jr. in Breaking Bad, whose character also had cerebral palsy. The role drew on the experience of a late friend of series creator Vince Gilligan, who had a more severe form of the condition and used forearm crutches. Mitte did not need crutches in his daily life.

The series received 58 Primetime Emmy nominations and won 16 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2013 and 2014. Mitte shared a Screen Actors Guild Award with the cast in 2014 for the show’s ensemble performance.

Disability Advocacy and Other Acting Work

Mitte used his public profile to advocate for better representation of people with disabilities. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and led the Mitte Foundation, which supported charitable work and community initiatives.

He called for more varied roles for disabled performers and more realistic portrayals of disability on screen. In a 2021 interview, he said progress in disability representation often came through individual moments rather than broad changes.

His other screen credits included Switched at Birth, The Guardians of Justice, Westhampton and Triumph. His latest project, Talking to Strangers, was released in 2026. He played Joshua, a reclusive man with cerebral palsy, in the romantic drama.

Mitte continued promoting the film shortly before his death. In a recent podcast appearance, he also described Breaking Bad as an anti-meth story because of the destructive consequences of the drug trade portrayed in the series.
