In a significant move escalating digital censorship, India has blocked access to the Instagram accounts of several prominent Pakistani celebrities, including Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir, Sanam Saeed, Iqra Aziz, and Bilal Abbas Khan.
According to media reports, when Indian users attempt to view these profiles, they are shown a message stating: “This account has been withheld in India in response to a legal request.”
Indian Government Restricts Pakistani Celebrities on Instagram
This development follows a broader crackdown by Indian authorities on Pakistani content across digital platforms. The action comes in the wake of the Pahalgam attack in Indian-Occupied Kashmir on April 22, which resulted in 28 deaths. Indian officials have since accused Pakistan of involvement, despite offering no public evidence to support the claim.
In response, India has intensified restrictions on Pakistani content. Earlier this week, 16 Pakistani YouTube channels were also blocked, including several affiliated with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of Pakistan.
Former Pakistani Cricketers Also Face Bans
In addition to celebrities from the entertainment industry, several former cricketers—notably Shoaib Akhtar, Basit Ali, and Rashid Latif—have also had their online channels and content blocked in India.
Rising Concerns Over Freedom of Expression
While Indian officials maintain that the bans are meant to protect “national security,” critics argue that it is part of a systematic campaign to suppress Pakistani voices online.
Social media users in both countries have expressed concern, calling the move a blow to freedom of expression and cross-border cultural exchange.
More Bans Expected on Pakistani Celebrities
Reports suggest that additional Pakistani artists and content creators may face similar bans in the coming days, as India continues its digital clampdown amid rising regional tensions.
