The viral ‘iron face’ trend links dark circles, hair loss and changes in skin color to iron deficiency. Health experts say these signs alone cannot confirm low iron levels.
The ‘iron face’ trend has gained attention on social media, prompting questions about whether iron deficiency can be detected by looking at someone’s face. Although low iron levels can cause visible changes in the skin, hair and nails, these symptoms can have several other causes.
What Is Ferritin
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body. Iron helps the body produce hemoglobin which carries oxygen through the blood. When iron stores become too low a person may develop iron deficiency. Severe or prolonged deficiency can lead to iron deficiency anemia.
What Changes Can Iron Deficiency Cause?
Changes in Skin Color
Iron deficiency anemia can cause pale skin. However, skin color alone cannot establish the cause of the change.
Hair Loss
Low iron levels may contribute to hair loss in some people. Stress, thyroid disorders, hormonal changes and other nutritional deficiencies can also cause it.
Weak or Brittle Nails
Iron deficiency can make nails brittle. In severe cases, nails may become thin and curve inward, a condition known as koilonychia or spoon-shaped nails.
Cracks at the Corners of the Mouth
Cracks or sores at the corners of the mouth may occur with iron deficiency. Infections, irritation and other nutritional deficiencies can produce similar symptoms.
Dark Circles Under the Eyes
Dark circles are not a reliable sign of iron deficiency. Genetics, ageing, allergies, sleep deprivation and skin structure can all contribute to their appearance. Iron deficiency may coexist with dark circles, but their presence alone does not confirm it.
Main Symptoms of Iron Deficiency
Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, a rapid heartbeat, headaches, dizziness and difficulty concentrating. Some people also experience hair loss and brittle nails.
Symptoms vary from person to person. Low iron stores may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages
Which Tests Can Detect Iron Deficiency
A blood test is needed to assess iron levels. Doctors may recommend a serum ferritin test to measure the body’s iron stores and a complete blood count (CBC) to check hemoglobin and other blood cell measurements. Additional tests may be needed depending on the symptoms and medical history of a person
Experts advise against diagnosing iron deficiency through facial appearance or social media symptom lists. Taking iron supplements without medical advice can also be harmful because excessive iron can damage organs
Anyone experiencing persistent fatigue, shortness of breath or unusual hair loss should consult a healthcare professional about appropriate testing.
