Karachi Electricity Consumers Bracing for Yet Another Tariff Hike

In a move that may impact the pockets of electricity consumers in Karachi, K-Electric is bracing for yet another power tariff hike, set to affect the April-June quarter of 2023. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is gearing up to deliberate on K-Electric’s request for a tariff increase of Rs 3.02 per unit as part of the quarterly adjustment. The hearing for this potential increase is scheduled for October 19.

This development comes on the heels of a previous tariff adjustment in September. At that time, NEPRA approved an increase in power tariffs for K-Electric consumers, citing monthly fuel adjustment charges. The result was an uptick in electricity prices ranging from Rs 1.48 to Rs 4.45, which went into effect after receiving the federal government’s nod.

For K-Electric consumers, the impact of this recent hike will be felt during the months of October and November 2023. The extent of the increase varies: Rs 1.48 for those consuming up to 300 units, Rs 3.21 for consumers exceeding 300 units, and a substantial Rs 4.45 per unit increase for consumers with 5-kilowatt connections and e-vehicle charging stations.

It is worth noting that NEPRA previously approved a tariff increase of Rs1.71 per unit, further adding to the challenges faced by electricity consumers in Karachi. This evolving situation underscores the need for consumers to closely monitor energy usage and consider energy-saving measures to mitigate the impact of rising electricity costs.
