A deserted village near Jaisalmer has carried a chilling legend for nearly 200 years. Kuldhara’s abandoned homes and the mystery surrounding the Paliwal community’s sudden departure continue to attract tourists and paranormal investigators
Kuldhara lies in Rajasthan’s Thar Desert, about 20 kilometers from Jaisalmer. The former settlement was established by Paliwal Brahmins in the 13th century and later became one of several prosperous Paliwal settlements in the region.
The village was abandoned in the early 19th century. Local tradition says more than 1,500 people from Kuldhara and nearby Paliwal settlements left overnight around 1825.
What happened next turned the abandoned village into one of Rajasthan’s best-known mysteries.
The Story Behind the Mass Departure
One popular legend links the exodus to Salim Singh, a powerful minister in the Jaisalmer state. According to the story, he wanted to marry the daughter of Kuldhara’s village chief.
The community allegedly rejected his demand. The minister then threatened the residents with higher taxes and other pressure.
Rather than accept his demands, the Paliwals are said to have decided to leave. Tradition holds that they abandoned their homes overnight and cursed the land so that nobody would ever settle there again.
There is no clear historical evidence confirming the curse or the dramatic details of the story.
Why Is Kuldhara Called Haunted?
The abandoned houses, empty streets and ruined structures have helped Kuldhara develop a reputation for paranormal activity
Local stories describe whispers, screams, footsteps and unexplained touches after sunset. Paranormal investigators have also claimed to record unusual temperature changes and electromagnetic activity during investigations.
These claims have not received independent scientific verification.
Kuldhara is now a protected heritage site. Visitors can explore the ruins during the day, but entry is restricted after sunset.
Migration or Something More?
Historians and other experts have offered explanations that do not involve ghosts
Economic hardship, increasing taxation, changes in trade routes and pressure from local rulers may have contributed to the Paliwals leaving the region. Some families may also have gradually moved to other parts of Rajasthan
The lack of a complete historical record has allowed the mystery to survive.
That leaves one question at the heart of the Kuldhara legend: why did an entire community abandon a prosperous settlement, and where did its people go?
Nearly two centuries later, the ruins remain. The answer is still debated. The haunting story lives on.
