Lahore: Excitement is already building among citizens for Basant Festival 2027, with more than 2,000 license applications submitted through the Basant Portal in just eight days. Preparations are underway to hold a safe and colorful three-day festival in mid-March next year.
According to officials, applications have been received from people involved in the manufacturing and sale of kites and kite strings. The large number of applications reflects strong public interest in the festival.
The government has announced strict safety measures for Basant. The use of metallic kite strings and reels will be completely banned, while 2 million safety rods will be distributed to protect motorcyclists from kite strings.
Authorities will also inspect rooftops and weak buildings. The Deputy Commissioner Lahore will have the authority to seal dangerous or unsafe buildings and locations violating safety rules.
The Kite Flying Association has welcomed the decision to revive Basant but has raised concerns about the requirement to disclose kite and string stocks to help control prices.
The government has also announced strict penalties. Kite flying before the permitted time may result in five years in prison and a fine of Rs. 2 million, while illegal sales may carry seven years in prison and a fine of Rs. 5 million.
