BRT Bus Regulations in Sindh: Fine For Wrong Door Use & Smoking

Sindh Government Implements Stricter Regulations on BRT Bus Travel

In a bid to enhance passenger experience and maintain discipline, the interim government of Sindh, Pakistan, has introduced new regulations for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses. Under the recently enacted Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2023, Governor Kamran Tessori has approved the imposition of fines on various behaviors that disrupt the smooth operation of the BRT system.

One of the key changes is the prohibition of smoking, as well as the consumption of gutka and naswar, within the BRT buses. Violators of this rule will face a fine of Rs1,000.

In addition, passengers must adhere to the designated entry and exit doors when boarding or leaving the BRT buses. Using the incorrect door could result in a fine of Rs500. The government has taken steps to prioritize the needs of disabled and differently-abled passengers by reserving special seats for them. Failure to recognize and yield these seats will lead to a fine of Rs500.

It’s worth noting that young children under the age of five will be exempt from fare charges while using the BRT buses, making public transportation more accessible for families.

Furthermore, the interim government has extended its focus beyond the buses themselves. The use of gutka, mainpuri, and cigarettes has been banned during duty hours within public sector offices and hospital premises. Employees of the Health Department are now strictly prohibited from using gutka, cigarettes, and mainpuri during their work hours.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to improving public transportation services and promoting healthier habits among citizens and employees alike.
