Slight Earthquake Shakes Malir, Karachi Yesterday; No Damage Reported
Karachi, Pakistan, witnessed mild tremors yesterday as a minor earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale struck the city, according to the Met Office. The quake’s epicenter was located ten kilometers west of Malir, with a depth of 30 kilometers, as confirmed by the seismological center. Thankfully, there have been no reports of damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake.
This event comes just over a month after a more significant earthquake, measuring 5.8 in magnitude, rocked cities like Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and others. The epicenter of that earthquake was near the Tajikistan and Afghanistan border, recorded at a depth of 196 kilometers in the Hindu Kush mountain range. While residents panicked and rushed out of their homes, no damages or casualties were reported in that instance either.
Notably, the tremors were also felt in India’s capital, Delhi, and neighboring areas, including parts of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Punjab.
Pakistan, due to its location on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, often experiences natural disasters such as earthquakes. The Indian plate’s northward movement into the Eurasian plate makes large parts of South Asia seismically active.
