KARACHI: Pakistan is set to determine the beginning of the Islamic month of Zilhaj as the country’s central moon-sighting body prepares to convene on Sunday (today), a meeting that will also pave the way for the official announcement of this year’s Eid al-Adha date.
A meeting of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to sight the moon of Zulhijjah 1447 will be held today.
According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will take place at the Meteorological Department in Karachi.
If the Zulhijjah moon is sighted on May 17, Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27. However, if the moon is not sighted, Eid al-Adha will be observed on Thursday, May 28.
The spokesperson added that in coastal areas in particular, there was likely to be a gap of around 60 minutes between sunset and moonset, which significantly improves the probability of the moon being visible.
On the basis of these projections, the first day of Zil Hajj is expected to fall on Monday, May 18, while Eid al-Adha is likely to be observed on May 27, subject to final confirmation.
