Electricity Bills in Pakistan Anticipated to Surge in Price

In Pakistan, electricity consumers are bracing for a possible hike in their monthly bills, with the cost per unit expected to rise by Rs0.55. This anticipated increase follows a request for an upward adjustment in the monthly fuel prices, submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) on behalf of government-owned Distribution Companies (Discos).

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is scheduled to review and make a decision on this request in the near future. If approved, this adjustment could translate to an additional financial burden of Rs8.37 billion for consumers for just one month.

The CPPA’s application reveals that in September, a substantial 12.92 billion units of electricity were consumed. Notably, hydropower contributed a significant 37.55% to the overall electricity production during this period, underlining the country’s reliance on renewable energy sources.

These statistics shed light on the ever-changing landscape of electricity generation in Pakistan and the potential financial implications for consumers. As the nation awaits Nepra’s verdict on the requested fuel price adjustment, consumers are advised to prepare for possible increases in their electricity bills in the coming months.
