Electricity Price Hike Likely in Pakistan as August Bills May Rise by PKR 1.20 Per Unit

Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, may have to pay higher power bills in August as a PKR 1.20 per unit increase has been proposed under the monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA).

Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has petitioned the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for approval of the hike, which is linked to the Fuel Charges Adjustment of June 2026. The regulator will make a final decision after a public hearing.

The proposed rise is to be made effective for one month, and should be seen on electricity bills in August 2026, further burdening millions of consumers already facing rising living costs.

CPPA Shares June Electricity Generation Mix

The country’s electricity during June was a mixture of various energy sources, according to CPPA’s petition. Hydropower continued to be the largest source, accounting for 39% of total electricity generation.

The generation breakdown is as follows:

• Hydropower: 39%
• Local coal: 10.11%
• Imported coal: 12.65%
• Imported gas: 11.02%
• Nuclear power: 13.40%

The fuel charge adjustment is requested on the basis of the electricity generation cost and overall fuel mix during June, CPPA said.

NEPRA to Make Final Decision

NEPRA will consider the CPPA’s request at a scheduled hearing prior to reaching its decision. The proposed increase will only go into effect when it receives regulatory approval.

The decision is likely to affect electricity consumers nationwide, including those using K-Electric in Karachi, but the details of the implementation for K-Electric customers will be finalized following NEPRA’s verdict.

Higher August Electricity Bills Expected

The additional cost will be seen in the electricity bills of consumers if the proposed increase in the prices of PKR 1.20 per unit is approved. The temporary adjustment, which will only apply for one month, could raise electricity costs for households and businesses across the country.

Now consumers wait for NEPRA’s decision which will decide that the proposed fuel charges adjustment will be implemented in next month’s electricity bills.
