Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to NEPRA for a fuel adjustment that could potentially lead to an increase in electricity price by Rs. 5 per unit for one month. The request, set to be heard by NEPRA on March 28th, could result in consumers bearing a burden of more than Rs. 40 billion if approved.
During February, 6.876 billion units of electricity were sold, with a breakdown of generation sources indicating 24.77% from water, 13.94% from local coal, and 1.89% from imported coal. Additionally, electricity was generated from local gas (11.04%), imported LNG (20.33%), and nuclear fuel (23.29%).
It’s important to note that if the request is approved, the increase will not be applied to electric consumers directly, as stated in the CPPA’s request.
This potential adjustment highlights ongoing discussions in the energy sector regarding fuel costs and their impact on electricity tariffs. Stay tuned for updates following NEPRA’s hearing on the matter.
