Incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan was returned to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail early on Friday, August 21, 2026, following a detailed medical examination at PIMS, involving doctors from Shifa International Hospital.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed on X that PTI founder Imran Khan underwent a comprehensive medical check up at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) overnight. He was transported back to Adiala Jail around 5:00 AM on August 21.
He stated that a specialized team of doctors including a cardiologist, an eye specialist (ophthalmologist), and a general physician, conducted a detailed medical examination and declared the former premier “medically fit.”
Tarar clarified that the examination also involved specialists from Shifa International Hospital. He added that Khan’s sister, Uzma Khanum, was present alongside him throughout the entire medical procedure.
The Supreme Court’s Order
On August 18, the Supreme Court had directed the government to transfer the 73-year-old Imran Khan from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital to undergo detailed medical examinations, following severe health complaints and vision issues in his right eye.
Federal authorities filed a review petition arguing the interim order was discriminatory, but law enforcement executed the court-ordered transfer under tight security. Over 800 police personnel were deployed around the medical facility to maintain order.
