Government Is Not Planning Any Smart Lockdown, Says Tariq Fazal Chaudhry

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has rejected reports that the government plans to impose a smart lockdown amid rising fuel prices and supply concerns.

Chaudhry addressed the reports while speaking to reporters in Islamabad on Tuesday. He said the government had not discussed any smart lockdown at the recent meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.

“Smart lockdown was neither discussed in the meeting chaired by the deputy prime minister nor is it within my knowledge,” Chaudhry said.

The clarification came as reports emerged that the government is considering a 4-work-day week to manage the impact of higher international oil prices.

Rs. 100 Petrol Relief Scheme

Chaudhry said the government is providing targeted fuel support to three-wheelers and vehicles with engines of up to 800cc for three months.

The government recently announced a Rs100-per-liter petrol subsidy scheme for motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws, and small cars.

Public representatives will also help guide people about the subsidy process.

Earlier Measures

Meanwhile, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said the government is reviewing earlier strictness measures. He said officials are assessing which measures should return. He said some measures, including market timings, remain in place.

The government had introduced several measures in March to reduce fuel consumption and limit the impact of higher oil prices. These included cuts in official vehicle fuel allowances and a partial work-from-home policy. The government ended most of those measures in June.

The government also introduced daily changes in petroleum prices as international oil prices became more volatile.

The government has taken these steps as tensions in the Middle East continue to affect global oil supplies and prices.
