Imran Khan To Be Transferred to Shifa International Hospital Immediately, Orders Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has directed authorities to move incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for specialized medical evaluation and treatment

A three member bench, headed by Justice Shahid Waheed and comprising Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, issued the order on August 18, 2026. The directive addresses long-standing petitions filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and Imran Khan’s family regarding his declining health and solitary confinement.

The court ordered jail authorities to transfer Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours. He will remain admitted there for medical care under tight security.

Key Details of the Court Decision

Specialized Medical Board

A medical board will be formed to oversee his treatment. The court mandated that Imran Khan’s personal physician and his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, remain associated with the board.

Access to Family

The apex court directed authorities to guarantee regular weekly meetings between Imran Khan and his family members.

Full Medical Records Demanded

Expressing dissatisfaction with the brief summary provided by Adiala Jail officials, Justice Shahid Waheed instructed the government to present his complete, unedited medical history.

What Sparked the Decision?

The ruling follows alarming health updates submitted to the court and mentioned by medical experts and former President Dr. Arif Alvi. Reports indicated that the 73 year old former prime minister is suffering from high stress, elevated blood pressure, severe anxiety, and heart palpitations resulting from prolonged isolation.

Additionally concerns were raised regarding his pulse rate, vital organ health, and recommendations for a cardiac angiography that could not be performed inside the prison facility.

The court instructed Imran Khan’s legal team, family and political party not to politicize his health condition or share confidential medical reports publicly.

Today also marks 8 years since Imran Khan took oath as Prime Minister on August 18, 2018.
