Noreen Niazi, the 70-year-old sister of jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, was transferred from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) after developing a health problem. Her lawyer says the family was not informed about the transfer.
Noreen was taken to the hospital on Wednesday evening, October 28, on the recommendation of jail doctors, according to her counsel, Rana Mudassar Umer. He said she was experiencing high blood pressure and heart-related discomfort. Doctors were conducting initial medical tests after her arrival at around 7:30pm.
Umer alleged that the authorities had not informed any family member about her condition or hospital transfer. He also claimed that jail officials had denied medicines to Imran Khan’s sisters and that the family and their lawyers had been unable to meet them.
A senior jail official rejected the allegations about medicines, telling that the inmates were receiving medicines and other daily-use items. The official said meetings with family members and lawyers required written permission from the Lahore deputy commissioner.
PTI Raises Concerns Over Noreen’s Health
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf expressed concern over Noreen’s hospitalization and questioned why her family had not been notified.
The party also challenged the legality of her detention and alleged that Imran Khan’s family members were facing politically motivated harassment.
Detention of Imran Khan’s Sisters Extended
Noreen, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan have been detained under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, since September. Authorities detained the sisters ahead of a planned PTI protest and march towards Islamabad.
Their initial 30-day detention orders were extended for another 30 days on October 7. On October 26, the Lahore High Court disposed of a petition seeking their release after the Punjab government informed the court about the extensions.
Noreen remains under detention while receiving medical attention at the PIC.
