Former prime minister Imran Khan’s ex-wife and renowned film producer, Jemima Goldsmith, has expressed her joy following the Supreme Court’s decision to release the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman. Khan was apprehended on Tuesday by Rangers personnel, acting on a warrant from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding the Al-Qadir Trust case. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) initially deemed Khan’s arrest as “legal,” prompting the PTI to seek relief from the Supreme Court.
In a recent tweet from the United Kingdom, where she currently resides with her sons, Goldsmith celebrated the SC order, stating, “Finally sense has prevailed.” Her tweet was accompanied by a high-five emoji and the Pakistani flag, signifying her support for Khan’s release.
The former prime minister, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other PTI leaders are currently under investigation by the NAB for their involvement in a settlement between the PTI government and a prominent property tycoon. The alleged settlement reportedly caused a loss of 190 million pounds to the national exchequer. According to the charges, Khan and his co-accused are suspected of mishandling the 190 million pounds provided by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to the government. Additionally, they are accused of acquiring significant land at Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, totaling over 458 kanals, to establish Al Qadir University, thereby gaining undue benefits.
Khan’s arrest occurred during his appearance for bail hearings in other cases at the IHC. Subsequently, violent protests erupted throughout the country, resulting in the unfortunate loss of at least eight lives and significant damage to infrastructure.
Overall, the Supreme Court’s declaration of Khan’s arrest as “illegal” and the subsequent order for his immediate release have elicited a positive response from Jemima Goldsmith, highlighting her satisfaction with the decision.
