In a recent development, Karachi residents have been alerted to the government’s plans for a potential increase in electricity prices. The government has formally requested an increase Karachi electricity bill charges, proposing a hike to Rs. 10.32 per unit.
Reports indicate that this proposed increase is attributed to three separate quarterly adjustments set for the fiscal year 2023-22. The request is currently scheduled for a hearing in NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority) on September 11, 2023.
On another front, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has rejected the government’s relief plan aimed at reducing electricity bills for consumers. The plan had promised relief of over 6 billion rupees in electricity bills. However, the IMF has expressed concerns, indicating an impact exceeding 15 billion rupees and has also called for a comprehensive plan to address this substantial fiscal shortfall.
This development highlights the challenges faced by both the government and consumers in balancing electricity costs and fiscal responsibilities. Karachi residents will be closely watching the outcome of the NEPRA hearing and any subsequent decisions regarding electricity pricing.
