Karachi Flour Prices Hit Rs2,900, Highest in Pakistan

Flour prices have increased once again across Pakistan, adding further pressure on household budgets as the cost of a 20-kilogram flour bag continues to climb in major cities.

The updated official pricing figures reveal that the price of flour in Karachi is the highest in the country, where a 20kg bag is now being sold at Rs2,900.

Other cities have also seen substantial price rises. In Islamabad, Quetta and Khuzdar, a 20kg bag of flour is Rs2,800 while in Peshawar it is Rs2,750.

The bags are priced at Rs2,747 in Rawalpindi, Rs2,740 in Hyderabad and Rs2,700 in Bannu.

In some cities prices are still comparatively low – a 20kg bag of flour is selling at Rs2,560 in Sukkur, Rs2,500 in Larkana, Rs2,420 in Multan, and Rs2,400 in Gujranwala and Bahawalpur respectively.

Meanwhile, these markets are also among the relatively cheaper markets as consumers are paying Rs2,333 in Sialkot, Rs2,300 in Faisalabad, Rs2,250 in Lahore and Rs2,240 in Sargodha.

The current price comparison of flour shows a wide range of prices, especially in different regions, depending on supply conditions, transport costs and market demand. Nevertheless, the overall trend shows prices of flour are still high throughout Pakistan.

The new hike in flour prices will put further pressure on the finances of households already facing higher food inflation, and the cost of key commodities. This is likely to have the most impact on people living in the middle and lower income group since flour is one of the most vital staple foods in the country.

Consumers have expressed concern over the continued rise in flour prices and are calling for effective measures to stabilize the market, improve the supply of wheat and ensure that essential food items remain affordable for the public.
