Karachi Green Line Bus Route Extension: Numaish to Old Radio Pakistan Building

In a significant development, the long-dormant Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Green Line project in Karachi set to revive as Sindh caretaker Chief Minister, retired Justice Maqbool Baqar, takes decisive action. The incomplete federal-funded initiative, which had abandoned for almost three years, came under scrutiny during a recent meeting chaired by the CM to address civic challenges in Karachi.

The Green Line project, operating from Surjani Town to Numaish, encountered a two-year halt in its second-phase construction on M.A. Jinnah Road. Chief Minister Maqbool Baqar swiftly responded by instructing the Sindh transport department to communicate with Islamabad and actively press authorities to resume and finish the long-delayed second phase, underscoring its significant benefits for Karachi residents.

CM orders transport department to push feds for Green Line extension. “Contract scrapped, re-tender needed to reach Old Radio Pakistan building,” CM House spokesperson said.

The meeting, attended by officials including Local Government Minister Mubin Jumani and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. The incomplete final phase of the project is extending from Numaish to Municipal Park near Jama Cloth Market. This phase abandoned in late 2020 after the federal government canceled the contract with the National Logistics Cell (NLC).

The first phase of construction for the Karachi BRT became operational in January 2022 after six years. However, the incomplete last phase has left hundreds of thousands of Karachiites without an affordable transport service. The CM rejected a proposal from the transport department to raise fares for the BRT Green Line and Intra-District Peoples Bus Service.

The Sindh cabinet extended the People Bus Service subsidy by six months. The proposal, backed by the transport department, got approval. It mentioned adding 30 new buses to increase daily ridership by 12,000 passengers. The cabinet approved Rs579.756 million in subsidy funds, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving public transportation in Karachi.
