Karachi Heatwave Alert: Residents Urged to Stay Cautious as Mercury Rises

The National Disaster Management Authority (National Disaster Management Authority) has issued a heatwave alert warning that Karachi and several other parts of Sindh will experience unusually high temperatures from May 19 to May 26, with conditions expected to remain severe for several consecutive days.

The southern region of Pakistan, especially in Sindh, is projected to be the most affected, as temperatures and humidity will continue to increase, making outdoor work increasingly challenging, the advisory noted.

Karachi Weather Expected to Worsen

Karachi is one of the major cities in Sindh under heatwave conditions. The City can expect:

• High daytime temperatures
• Increased humidity levels
• Hot and uncomfortable nights
• Stronger heat intensity during peak afternoon hours

The heat and humidity may make it even hotter than the actual temperature in Karachi, according to the weather experts.

Excessive exposure to extreme heat can result in:

• Heat exhaustion
• Dehydration
• Heatstroke

The most vulnerable population during this heatwave spell is children, elderly citizens and outdoor workers.

NDMA Advisory for Citizens

The NDMA has advised the people of Karachi to take precautionary steps such as:

• Avoiding outdoor activity between 11am and 4pm
• Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
• Wearing light-colored and loose clothing
• Keeping homes as cool as possible
• Checking on elderly family members regularly

Pressure on Power and Services Expected

The officials also warned that the power supply system in Karachi may be put under strain due to the rising temperature, which would result in higher electricity demand. There may also be a greater number of patients at healthcare facilities as a result of heat-related illnesses.
