Karachi, August 7, 2026: Commuters in Karachi should prepare for significant traffic disruptions today as Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) stages nationwide protests against rising fuel prices and the government’s petroleum levy on petrol and diesel. The party has announced demonstrations at 507 locations across Pakistan, with Karachi expected to witness some of the largest gatherings.

Which Roads Are Expected to Be Blocked in Karachi?

According to Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, protesters will gather from major roads across Karachi before converging at Mazar-e-Quaid at approximately 4:00 PM. After the main gathering, rallies will continue through different parts of the city.

The following roads are expected to face closures or severe traffic congestion:

• Shahrah-e-Faisal (confirmed by JI leadership)
• Roads leading to Mazar-e-Quaid
• Major arteries connecting different districts of Karachi, where rallies expected to merge before proceeding through the city.

Shahrah-e-Faisal to Face Major Disruptions

Ameer-e-Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman said Shahrah-e-Faisal, one of Karachi’s busiest roads, will blocked as part of the protest campaign. Thousands of commuters are likely to experience delays, especially during the evening rush hour.

Why Is Jamaat-e-Islami Protesting?

The protests have organized in response to the recent increase in fuel prices and the petroleum levy imposed on petrol and diesel.

Speaking to the media, Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman described the petroleum levy as a “Bhatta Tax,” claiming it has no relation to the actual cost of fuel. He alleged that the government is placing an unfair financial burden on citizens by continuing to collect the levy despite soaring inflation.

He added that demonstrations at 507 locations nationwide aim to pressure the government into abolishing the petroleum levy and providing relief to the public.

Traffic Advisory for Karachi Residents

Motorists are advised to:

• Avoid Shahrah-e-Faisal if possible.
• Expect heavy congestion around Mazar-e-Quaid and adjoining roads after 4:00 PM.
• Allow extra travel time and follow updates issued by the Karachi Traffic Police, as road closures may change throughout the day.
