Karachi Ranked Among Most Polluted Cities in the World

In a recent update on Thursday, Karachi found itself in the spotlight once again as one of the most polluted cities in the world, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI) report.

With a staggering AQI reading of 175 for particulate matter, Karachi’s air quality remains a significant concern for its residents.

The city’s weather forecast offers no respite, with hot and dry conditions prevailing, and temperatures ranging from 34 to 37 degrees Celsius.

It’s crucial to note that an AQI between 151 and 200 is classified as unhealthy, while readings from 201 to 300 pose even greater health risks. An AQI exceeding 300 is considered extremely hazardous.

In winter, denser air causes harmful particles to descend and saturate the atmosphere, forming a thick layer of pollutants, including high carbon and smoke levels, enveloping the city, as explained by experts.

The primary culprits contributing to this pollution are industrial emissions and the burning of coal, garbage, oil, and tires. The effects of these pollutants become most evident during the winter season, persisting throughout its duration.

AQI relies on five pollution categories: ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Karachi, with sea winds at 05 nautical miles per hour, struggles in winter. These winds, an air filter, often stagnate, failing to disperse pollutants.

Northeast winds worsen pollution. Rainfall cleanses the environment by washing away harmful particles, offering hope for a healthier atmosphere.

Karachi faces ongoing air pollution. Sustainable measures and awareness are crucial. Coastal winds help temporarily, but long-term solutions are needed to address the air quality crisis and its health effects.
