Karachi Rickshaw Ban Proposal: Metered Rickshaws May Be the Only Ones Allowed

Karachi’s traffic system could soon witness a major transformation as the Traffic Police consider imposing a ban on all types of rickshaws, while allowing only metered rickshaws to operate. The Karachi rickshaw ban proposal is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving road safety across the city.

DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah shared it during a media briefing, stating that he has begun taking practical steps to eliminate the Qingqi rickshaws from the main roads and highways. The administration is studying the possibility of gradually getting rid of all rickshaws unless they have working fare meters on board, he said.

Karachi Rickshaw Ban Proposal Under Review

The DIG Traffic claims that the proposal to ban rickshaws is aimed at modernizing the city’s transport system and improving the flow of traffic. The officials think that if rickshaws are limited when it comes to non-meters they will be able to control the public transport and as a result will have a better discipline on the road.

The idea is still being considered, though, and there’s no official word on a decision yet.

Qingqi Rickshaws May Be Removed from Main Roads

Traffic Police have been taking action against the Qingqi rickshaws on the busiest roads of Karachi. These vehicles are thought to be a major cause of traffic jams and unsafe driving conditions.

The plan is to be implemented along with the Safe City Project, which involves digital traffic monitoring, lane marking, and an automated e-ticketing system.

E-Challan System and Fake Number Plates

Citizens have had concerns that are legitimate about the automated e-challan system, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah has acknowledged. Technical or human errors can happen since e-challans are made electronically. A new policy is being drafted to respond to concerns raised by the public and in order to offer relief where it is needed, he said.

He also disclosed that almost 45,000 cars are at present being operated by non-registered drivers in the city of Karachi. Meanwhile, stringent measures are ongoing on vehicles owned with fake registration numbers and such vehicles are seized and handed over to the police.

Free Driving Training for Women Electric Scooter Riders

The Traffic Police also announced free driving training for the ladies who have been given electric scooters under the government scheme. The goal of this campaign is to make the roads safer and improve women’s confidence in riding the bus.

Karachi Traffic Accident Deaths Decline

The DIG shared the recent road safety figures with the audience, revealing that last year, 164 people died in road accidents in Karachi. Nevertheless, the trend towards lowering the number of accident fatalities through continued enforcement actions and better traffic management shows positive strides toward road safety, with a decrease of 45 percent.

The ban on the use of rickshaws in the city of Karachi has generated mixed reactions from local residents and transport operators, with the main goal being to establish a safer, more organized, and efficient traffic system for the city. The decision on the proposal will be made following additional consultation with relevant stakeholders.
